"They value the staff that they bring on..."

Stacy Van Buren Headshot

I knew as far back as high school, and growing up on a farm and helping my dad with his accounts, that accounting was something that I could do. I wanted to work in, and support companies. So, I’ve worked from the ground up in every key position in accounting in for-profit manufacturing and service companies, restaurants, and even tech. But I really wanted to work for a purpose and not just to make someone money, so I realized that nonprofits were my path. Throughout my career I’ve realized I can lead a team but miss the details and getting immersed in a spreadsheet.

I was Vice President of Finance and Administration for a fast-paced Denver nonprofit when the pandemic hit. We had to quickly turn everything electronic and run the business remotely. I soon felt the burnout and it was time for me to step down and let someone else who had more energy pick up the work. I took some time to travel and figure out where I wanted my career to go. I started to see YPTC interviewing across the country and began to pursue them: they have a culture in which they value the staff that they bring on. They don’t second-guess us. They use everyone’s experiences and what each person has to offer to the best advantage and encourage collaboration among staff. We’re all working for the same goal – to support our clients.

What also brought me to YPTC was the level of support. One of your counterparts is always willing to jump in and help out if you have a problem. There are so many people here to bounce ideas off of. Being able to work from home was one of the biggest advantages: I wanted to work remotely and be able to work from my parents’ home or spend a month in Montana if I want to.

What YPTC puts out — in their job offerings, in the interview and in the orientation — about who they are and what to expect as an employee is accurate; I haven’t had any surprises. It’s the most extensive orientation I’ve ever had but it gets everybody on the same page right away. YPTC’s model is amazing!
