"There’s communication and transparency here..."

Betsy Lusa Headshot ST (1)

I’ve done a little bit of everything. I majored in accounting in college, then went into real estate accounting here in Boston and then auditing real estate companies. I wanted to take a break when I was ready to have kids, so I took 10 years off. When my youngest started kindergarten I wanted to start working again so I tried tax for three years but didn’t love the work. I started looking for something different that was part-time, and I found YPTC and another company. I interviewed with both, but the other company didn’t do nonprofit work and didn’t sound as flexible as YPTC.

I love the thought of working for nonprofits. This is something I haven’t done before, but more important it makes me feel good to know that I’m helping these organizations. I’m really happy.

Why do I like working for YPTC? Number One is flexibility. The emphasis on work-life balance and being able to work remotely is huge. Having three kids in elementary school, middle school and high school, I often have to run out to a school, but I can come back and pick up my work later. People here are very understanding; you don’t have to feel bad about having to run out.

I’m a staff accountant and everybody is available to me. I feel comfortable asking anyone a question. The associates and managers are there for me, and they get back to me when I have a question. The managers do monthly check-ins to ask how I’m doing and what issues I have or problems I need to solve. They ask me what I need and what I’d like to learn. They value employees giving them feedback and suggestions. There’s communication and transparency here that you don’t find at other companies. I’ve worked for different companies but here at YPTC I feel the most valued.

In the interviews they emphasize how friendly and helpful everyone here is, and at first, I thought it sounded like a gimmick. But they’re not saying it: it’s true. It’s just the culture here.
