Can you tell us more about you and the beginning of your accounting career?
Khubaib Hassan: I was born and raised in Pakistan and came to the United States in 2009. In 2012, I was admitted to University of Wisconsin Milwaukee while working full-time and graduated in 2017. I started my career working at a CPA accounting firm. Then, in 2019, I was hired as a Centralized Accounting Analyst by Northwestern Mutual.
How did you find out about YPTC and what made you interested in applying?
KH: I used to do volunteer work for a nonprofit organization, and it made me want to learn more about nonprofit accounting. Until I found YPTC, I had no idea that companies solely focusing on the nonprofit sector existed.
What made you pursue your CMA certification?
KH: While in school, I would always hear about CPA certification. However, for a CPA certificate, 150 credits were required. I already had a large student loan; so, I didn’t want to go back to school and increase that loan amount which would postpone my academic goals.
When I joined YPTC in 2022, I was assigned an ambassador (mentor) through YPTC’s ambassador program. I discussed my situation with my ambassador, and he advised me that instead of waiting to pay my loan and completing 30 more credits, I should consider a CMA certification that wouldn’t require 150 credits.
I had approximately seven years of accounting experience before I came to YPTC, but I hadn’t heard of a CMA certification before. After his advice, I looked into a CMA program and found that it combined financial accounting and management skills, which I really liked. So, I started studying for the exams and passed both parts within eight months.
How did YPTC help you obtain your CMA certification?
KH: I’m really thankful to all my managers and mentors, who were all encouraging and a huge source of support throughout my study. YPTC’s professional development initiatives, the Professional Development time, PTO (Paid Time Off), and expense reimbursement policies—also helped me greatly.
What is most rewarding about your career at YPTC and what makes you see a future here?
KH: Working at YPTC is highly satisfying, because you’re devoting time to organizations working towards good causes instead of working toward increasing someone’s personal wealth. I am excited about a future at YPTC because of the growth opportunities available and the continued guidance from my management team.
